Kolad Beyond Rafting: Scenic Side Of Maharashtra’s Adventure Hub

Discover Kolad beyond white-water rafting, where village life, farm stays, forest trails and hidden waterfalls create a slower, more soulful Konkan escape

Author : Tenzin Chodon

For most travellers, Kolad is synonymous with white-water rafting and is the adventure capital of Maharashtra. The mention of its name evokes the roar of the Kundalika River and the thrill of navigating rapids through the Sahyadri hills. It is the only place in the state where rafting is possible year-round, thanks to the controlled release of water from the nearby Bhira Dam.

However, viewing Kolad solely as an adventure-sports destination misses its soul. Tucked between the Sahyadris and the plains of the Konkan belt, this riverside village in Raigad district is a gateway to rural Maharashtra. Kolad offers a glimpse into the slow life that defines the Konkan hinterland.

Why Kolad Is One Of Maharashtra’s Most Underrated Getaways

Kolad’s charm comes from its location between the Western Ghats and the Konkan coast. This gives it both lush green hills and winding rivers that feel far from city life. The air is fresh, the scenery vibrant, and the atmosphere peaceful.

Kolad stands out for its balance of excitement and relaxation. You can spend a morning rafting and a quiet evening at a local farmhouse. This mix of adventure and calm makes it one of the most underrated escapes in Maharashtra.

Stay At A Farm Stay Or Riverside Retreat

Explore Rural Village Life

Kolad is not a commercial hill station; it’s a real village, and that’s the charm. On an early morning walk, you’ll see farmers heading to their fields, children cycling to school, small temples, and locals by the river. It’s a peaceful way to experience the Konkan countryside without anything feeling staged.

Waterfall Chasing In Monsoon

Kolad becomes a waterfall paradise during the monsoon and early post-monsoon months. Seasonal waterfalls appear in the region, often hidden behind forest trails and village routes. Iconic spots like Devkund Waterfall near Bhira and the roadside cascades of Tamhini Ghat are easily accessible. For a quieter experience, the Sutarwadi Lake area offers smaller falls, perfect for a quick escape.

Go For Nature Walks And Forest Trails

Kolad is surrounded by greenery, making it ideal for slow nature walks. Even without a formal trek, you can explore forest patches, riverside trails, and scenic viewpoints near your stay.

Spend Time By The Kundalika River

Even if you don’t raft, the Kundalika River is one of Kolad’s biggest highlights. Sitting by the river during sunrise or sunset is a simple but unforgettable experience, especially when the surroundings are misty and green. Some stays also offer riverside picnics, kayaking (seasonal), or quiet spots for relaxing.

Enjoy Local Konkan-Style Food

Food is the highlight of any stay in Kolad, with most farm stays serving homemade Maharashtrian and Konkan meals made with fresh, local ingredients. You can expect comforting dishes like Pithla-Bhakri, coconut-based curries, and simple dal-rice paired with seasonal vegetables.

The best time to visit Kolad depends on your experience preferences. During the Monsoon (June to September), the region is dramatic and beautiful, with lush greenery and active waterfalls, though heavy rains can pause rafting.
