Best time to visit

There are two major seasons that stand out as ideal if you want to experience the thrill of this water sport. March to May, which spans the receding winter season and early summer, offers the perfect weather to enjoy rafting in Rishikesh.

September to November, when the waters have stabilised after the rainy season, offers the next window of opportunity, because it presents ideal conditions to navigate the rapids.

Levels of Rafting

Before diving headfirst into the river rafting experience in Rishikesh, it is important to understand and choose a route and a grade of rafting that is most suitable to your abilities. Broadly speaking, there are four grades of river rafting:

Grade 1: The Brahmpuri- Rishikesh stretch is nine km long and is the easiest rafting stretch. It is ideal for beginners as well as the elderly. The waters are mostly calm with a few rapids that allow for a mixture of relaxation and adventure. The journey lasts 1.5-2 hours.

Grade 2: The Shivpuri to Rishikesh stretch is the most popular among tourists. It is 16 km long and has a number of rapids along the way. Nonetheless, its moderately easy to navigate and adequately provides the thrill you are looking for. You can also take a dip in the river and do body surfing. It lasts for around two to three hours.

Grade 3: The Marine drive trek is 24 km long and takes around 3.5 hours to complete. This route is for the seasoned rafters, with 14 rapids along the way. You are bound to get wet during the experience. Pack a set of dry clothes. Take essentials like phone and wallet in a waterproof bag.

Be ready for the difference in atmospheric and water temperature. The water is bound to be cold and you shall be drenched, so wearing a dry suit is most advisable.

Carry a water bottle to stay hydrated and wear sunscreen to protect your skin from continued exposure.

Wear secure footwear that does not come off easily, like strap sandals and sneakers, instead of flip flops.
