A wall of smoke hit my face as I stepped outside the club. A group stood around, cigarettes dangling from their fingers. It was almost 2 am, and people were still raring to go. I would be too, if I hadn’t had to embark on a road trip in a few hours. My second night in Melbourne had filled me with an anxious impulse to explore the nightlife, see a little more of the city before I got on with a packed itinerary. But I had to get back to my hotel soon. The map showed a 20-minute walk, and I was on my way. A little later, a tall figure zoomed past me, nodding a hello. He was in full athletic gear, doing laps around the little cluster of bars in Fitzroy before even the hope of morning had touched a soul. Melbourne was fast becoming my favourite city in the world.
