About Penukonda Fort

This fort, built during the Vijayanagara Empire, served as a refuge and a capital for the Vijayanagara kings after the Battle of Talikota. Situated approximately 150 kms from Bengaluru, the fort is located on a hilltop. It offers stunning panoramic views and features various structures, including palaces, temples, and mosques. The fort is also a popular destination for bike rides and treks. 

Penukonda Fort is a notable example of the region's rich cultural heritage, blending Hindu and Muslim architectural styles. Set against hills for natural protection, the fort features a grand central hall with a Hindu-inspired dome and elegant Islamic flooring patterns. Surrounded by moats and robust outer walls made from durable stone, the fort showcases impressive craftsmanship. Inside, residential buildings that once housed the royal family reveal ornate details and spacious halls, reflecting the artistic sensibilities and cultural intricacies of their time.

Inside The Fort

Within the fort, there are several temples, including a large idol of Hindu deity Hanuman. But the fort's most prominent features include Gagan Mahal, a palace built in the 16th century; and Babaiah Dargah, a structure that symbolises Hindu-Muslim unity.

Gagan Mahal served as the summer retreat for the kings and features a grand hall, stucco-coated walls, recessed arches, and a lookout tower. The Babaiah Dargah, a tomb of a Sufi saint, is a symbol of communal harmony, with both Hindus and Muslims paying respect. 

This fort in Andhra Pradesh is also home to numerous Hindu temples and several mosques, including the Sher Khan Mosque, reflecting the diverse religious landscape of the area. Various other buildings, such as baths, a natural lake, and smaller palaces, contribute to the fort's historical ambiance.

You can also visit the Kumbakarna Garden, which spans five acres and features an impressive 142 ft long sculpture of the sleeping Kumbakarna. Visitors can enter the sculpture through its belly.

The fort's location on a large hill provides breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape, including the town below and nearby wind turbines.

There are several interesting places to see near the fort. Lepakshi Temple, famous for its "Hanging Pillar," is located in the nearby village of Lepakshi. This temple is renowned for its architectural grandeur and intricate carvings.

Penukonda is also a significant site amongst Jain communities, featuring the Pache Parsvanath Swamy Temple and other sacred locations. Within the Penukonda area, the Veerabhadra Temple serves as a prominent religious site. Additionally, the ISKCON Anantapur Temple is another important religious site located in Anantapur.

The Thimmamma Marrimanu Banyan Tree, a giant banyan tree, holds a long history and cultural significance. Several historical forts are situated near Penukonda, including the stunning Gooty Fort and the Adoni Fort, both worth visiting in the Adoni region.

By Air: The nearest airport to Penukonda Fort is Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru (BLR), located approximately 120 km away. From the airport, travellers have several options to reach Penukonda Fort, including train, bus, or taxi.

By Rail: For those opting for rail travel, the closest railway station is Penukonda Junction (PKD), which is conveniently situated a short distance from the fort. Once you arrive at Penukonda, be prepared for a bit of a trek, as the fort itself is perched on a hilltop that is not directly accessible by car. To reach the fort, you will need to embark on a trek of about five-six kms.

Best Time To Visit

The best time to visit Penukonda Fort is typically between October and March. During these months, the weather is generally cooler and more pleasant for exploring the fort and its surroundings.
