Spread over more than 5,000 square kilometres and situated at an altitude of 19,000 feet Zanskar, during January and February, is a winter wonderland. It is here that the latest edition of the Zanskar Winter Sports and Tourism Festival will be held. Tentatively starting on 28th January and ending on 15th February, the event is likely to be inaugurated by the Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, and Information and Broadcasting, Anurag Thakur. The main events of the Zanskar Winter Sports and Tourism Festival will include skiing, ice-climbing, ice hockey, ice skating, snow sculpting, archery, snow-yak riding, snow scooter-riding, and a food festival showcasing the local culinary style of the region.

Special Treatment

To support the local population, boost the economy, and ensure that the participants and the spectators receive the maximum benefit of the festival, the authorities are incorporating creative, unique, and innovative snow-specific sports and activities in the festival. This includes helicopter services, which will be available for tourists attending the festival.

Construct And Conserve

The infrastructure for the festival has been created in such a way as to minimise its impact on the fragile ecology and resources of the region while generating income for the locals. There are more than adequate arrangements made for the participants by way of proper water supply, medical, boarding and lodging facilities, arrangements for stalls selling food, and the stage for the cultural performances, etc.
