Tailored For Travel

Rahul Mishra, the first Indian designer to have showcased at the Paris Haute Couture Week in 2020, is known for his exquisite silhouettes adorned with intricate embroidery and signature 3D embellishments. A champion of "slow fashion" and ethical, sustainable fashion practices, the designer spoke about his love for travelling and how visiting new places fills his cup of inspiration.

In what ways does travel inspire you?

I am curious by nature and often find myself engrossed in observing people, appreciating crafts, delving into the historical narratives of cultures, and understanding the nuances behind each tradition. The experience of travel, whether for business or leisure, is endlessly stimulating. Even revisiting a place multiple times is akin to re-reading a book, revealing new layers and perspectives each time. My travels often have a profound impact on my creative process. For instance, a recent visit to the scenic and sustainable Soneva Fushi resort in the Maldives, with its clear waters and breathtaking coral reefs, ultimately inspired an entire collection.

You studied at Milan. How was your experience there as a non-European designer?

Apart from my time at Istituto Marangoni, the city gave me a wealth of immersive experiences. For me, the essence of discovering Milan was in the simple acts of walking and observing. In spite of the demands of my coursework, I found ample time to wander the city streets, especially after 5 pm, till late evening. These walks allowed me to closely study various aspects of the city—fashion, the design culture, window displays, architectural marvels, the influence of design in its urban landscape, and the interplay of colours in its streets. Exploring different localities by taking the metro further enriched my cultural and design-related experiences that have shaped my design journey.

You travel extensively. Which place has impacted you most?

Paris holds a special place in my heart. It's not just the City of Lights; it's a city that interacts with you in a unique way. I particularly enjoy walking around the city. While my current work schedule has limited my walks on the streets, during my earlier years, especially around 2014-15 when I was doing RTW (Ready-to-Wear) shows, I would often wander the streets of Paris for hours, sometimes even losing my way. During these times, I stumbled upon unexpected views of the Eiffel Tower from different corners of the city. In fact, as the GPS system was not very evolved then, the walking experience led me to some amazing discoveries, like charming buildings with intricate interiors, majestic doors opening into quaint courtyards, and the ornate, maximalist Parisian architecture.

You hold Paris so dear. How has the city shaped your work?

Paris has always been a source of inspiration. One of my favourite experiences in the city is enjoying a quiet morning breakfast at a boulangerie, relishing the aroma of freshly baked bread. Observing the pulse of the fashion industry in Paris and being a part of the grandeur of its fashion weeks have greatly influenced my body of work.

When you travel to a new place for work, do you find time to explore it?

Whenever I travel for work, I set aside time to explore. Although my schedule can be tight, I find time to uncover hidden gems and get the essence of the place. During one of the Paris Couture Weeks, I vividly remember taking a walk with my wife and daughter on a stunning bridge in front of the Louvre, where we were amazed by the gorgeous sunset. During a recent work trip to Guangzhou, I had a chance to visit the local area, observe the culture and the rich history, and witness the spirit of old Guangzhou. Such experiences with deep historical significance and diverse landscapes fascinate me.

What are some experiences that your hometown, Malhausi, UP, offers?

The charm of Malhausi lies in its past. When there was no electricity, the village thrived under the open sky, the slow pace of life and the abundance of untouched nature creating a tranquil atmosphere. Unfortunately, with rapid urbanisation, the village has changed. Pollution from big cities nearby now clouds the bright stars under which I lay listening to my grandmother's stories as a child.

You studied design in Ahmedabad. Tell us about your memories there.

I cherish Ahmedabad a lot, especially my time at the National Institute of Design. My favourite memories are visiting Sidi Saiyyed ni Jali, the delightful food experiences at Agashiye and the vibrant markets in the old city. Immersing myself in the city's local culture, such as the vibrant Garba celebrations, Uttarayan and the local "Ahmedabadi" cuisine, are experiences I would recommend to any traveller. Life at NID felt like being on a small, cherished island, and my six years there remain some of my most treasured memories.
