Washington, DC, is gearing up to mark America's 250th anniversary with a grand year-long celebration in 2026. The celebration will feature a diverse lineup of events across its cultural landmarks, museums, attractions, and hospitality sector. With its deep historical significance and status as the nation's capital, the city is set to be the focal point of the milestone commemoration.
Destination DC, in collaboration with over 70 organisations from the city's tourism and hospitality sectors, has unveiled plans for DC250, a year-long celebration set to take place across Washington's cultural institutions and the National Mall. The initiative aims to showcase the city's historical significance while offering a dynamic programme of events, exhibitions, and experiences. The launch event was held at the National Archives Museum, home to the Declaration of Independence and other founding documents, setting the stage for what promises to be a landmark commemoration. A dedicated website, DC250.us, will serve as a central hub for updates and visitor information.
Beyond the National Mall, DC250 will extend into Washington's diverse neighbourhoods, incorporating performances, public art installations, and special events celebrating national history and the city's rich local culture. With a strong focus on accessibility and engagement, the celebrations will offer free and ticketed experiences, ensuring that residents and visitors can participate in this historic milestone.
Washington, DC, saw a record-breaking 25.95 million visitors in 2023, surpassing pre-pandemic numbers. Tourism generated $10.2 billion in visitor spending and supported over 102,000 local jobs, according to MMGY Travel Intelligence and the U.S. Department of Commerce. While the full economic impact of DC250 remains to be seen, the hospitality industry, including hotels, restaurants, and attractions, is expected to benefit from the influx of visitors throughout 2026.
Destination DC is also rolling out marketing campaigns targeting domestic and international travellers to encourage extended stays. Special hotel packages and themed itineraries will be introduced to further explore the city's rich history.
