Saudi Arabia is ambitiously pursuing the development of several futuristic cities as part of its Vision 2030 strategy, which aims to diversify the economy and position the country as a global leader in innovation and technology. Among these groundbreaking projects, NEOM stands out as a megacity, envisioned to be a hub of advanced technology and sustainable living. Located in the northwest of the country, NEOM is designed to span approximately 26,500 sq km and is expected to incorporate cutting-edge technologies in urban planning, energy, and artificial intelligence.

In addition to NEOM, two other significant developments are making headlines: Riyadh Smart City and Jeddah Economic City. Together, these projects are not just ambitious urban developments; they are milestones in Saudi Arabia's efforts to rewrite its economic narrative and position itself as a leading player in the global economy.

Futuristic Cities of Saudi Arabia

NEOM

NEOM is a massive, futuristic, high-tech city project in Saudi Arabia, designed to diversify the nation's economy and reduce its dependence on oil. It is a cornerstone of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030, aiming to become a global hub for innovation, sustainability, and technological advancement. Envisioned as a sustainable city powered by renewable energy, NEOM focuses on a new model for urban living and working.

Located in the northwest region of Saudi Arabia near the Red Sea, NEOM aims to create an environment where people and nature coexist, prioritising sustainable living and environmental protection. The city is planned to be a linear model extending 170 km long, 500 m high, and 200 m wide, with a car-free design that ensures all necessities are accessible within a five-minute walk. Key features will include Oxagon, a floating circular business district; Trojena, an artificial ski resort; and Sindalah, a luxury island resort. NEOM will rely on 100 per cent renewable energy, achieve zero carbon emissions, and incorporate artificial intelligence, smart homes, and advanced healthcare. Ultimately, NEOM is designed to diversify Saudi Arabia's economy, attract investment, and serve as a global hub for innovation.

Riyadh Smart City

Riyadh is a prominent Saudi city that is actively evolving into a smart city, guided by the goals of Vision 2030, which emphasises economic diversification, sustainability, and technological advancement. Key initiatives focus on leveraging technology to enhance daily lives, promote sustainable development, and encourage citizen participation. The city aims to improve mobility, health and safety, and governance while exploring new urban living models like the 15-minute city concept. This model ensures that residents can access essential services within a short distance.

The city encourages community involvement in development through open dialogue and a shared vision. The "15-Minute Indicator" feature in the MyCity app helps residents identify daily services available within a 15-minute walk, supporting sustainable urban living. These innovative city initiatives are expected to contribute to economic diversification and create new opportunities for businesses and residents.

Projects like the New Murabba district are redefining urban landscapes and creating new hubs for residents. The Riyadh Knowledge Corridor (RKC) will focus on developing a technology hub and a knowledge-based economy in the northwest district. Additionally, the Green Riyadh project aims to plant 7.5 million trees throughout the city by 2030, improving air quality and expanding green spaces.

Jeddah Economic City

Jeddah Economic City is designed to be a vibrant urban and mixed-use district, offering a blend of commercial, residential, and entertainment facilities. It aims to attract investors, tourists, and businesses alike. The development's centrepiece is the Jeddah Tower, which is expected to be the world's tallest building. It will feature a luxurious Four Seasons hotel, top-tier office spaces, and high-end condominiums. Additionally, it will include the world's highest observation deck, providing panoramic views of the city.

The city will also boast a diverse range of residential and hotel options as well as civic and entertainment venues. Shopping will be an experience, with options ranging from large malls to luxury boutiques. Dining and entertainment venues will include gourmet restaurants and various attractions.

Furthermore, Jeddah Economic City will feature world-class tennis courts and coastal areas with beach resorts, offering opportunities for relaxation and leisure. A man-made waterfront will enhance the area, complete with walkways, cafés, shops, and restaurants, creating a lively atmosphere for visitors and residents.
