MACS MTO offers more than a display of beautiful objects—it is conceived as a platform for cultural exchange, social interaction, and spiritual discovery. Its permanent collection features nearly 300 symbolic, decorative, and everyday objects that bring Sufi teachings and aesthetics to life. These range from rare manuscripts and embroidered textiles to ceramic mosaics, musical instruments, and intricate calligraphy.

In addition to its historical collection, the museum presents a lively programme of contemporary art exhibitions, talks, events, and workshops. Inside The Museum: A Journey Through Sufi Art and Symbolism

The museum’s collection is drawn from the archives of the Maktab Tarighat Oveyssi (MTO) Shahmaghsoudi School of Islamic Sufism, which operates centres across six continents. From this vast cultural reserve, the museum showcases hundreds of symbolic, decorative, and everyday Sufi objects, many of which are rarely seen outside private collections. Highlights include:

• Kashkūls – beautifully decorated alms bowls that symbolise the renunciation of materialism and openness to divine wisdom. These are among the most visually striking and spiritually loaded items in the collection.

• Khirqa – a ceremonial cloak, richly embroidered in purple and yellow velvet with gold thread, traditionally passed on to a Sufi initiate by their master. One 20th-century example on display was gifted to the current MTO master.

• Silsila – genealogical scrolls tracing the spiritual lineage of Sufi masters.

• Mihrabs, walking sticks, carpets, and sculptures, each holding symbolic meaning within Sufi practice.

One of the most engaging elements of the exhibition is an interactive hologram of Hazrat Shah Maghsoud Sadegh Angha, a renowned 20th-century Iranian Sufi master, scholar, and poet. Seated in his library, he speaks about Sufism—offering visitors a direct and personal introduction to Sufi philosophy.

Beyond historical artefacts, the museum seeks to create a dialogue between traditional Sufi principles and contemporary artistic expression.
