Remembering George Orwell: The Literary Giant Born In Bihar

As the world marks the birth anniversary of George Orwell on June 25, it’s worth pausing to remember that the author of Animal Farm and 1984—two of the most defining works of 20th-century literature—was born not in England, but in Motihari, Bihar, in 1903.

Born as Eric Arthur Blair, Orwell’s early ties to India are often overlooked, especially by newer generations just discovering his complex, thought-provoking writing. His father, Richard Walmesley Blair, worked in the Opium Department of the Indian Civil Service under British rule. His mother, of French descent, was the daughter of a teak merchant in Burma (present-day Myanmar).

Though Orwell moved to England as an infant, these colonial connections—and his later stint as a British officer in Burma—would deeply influence his worldview and the themes of power, inequality, and resistance that echo through his works.

For a long time, the house of the legendary author was in disrepair. In an article published in The Caravan, an author traces how a piece titled "In search of a Jaarg Arwil" in the Sunday Times of 1984 by Ian Jack recounted that locals were mostly clueless to their town being the author's birthplace. The piece also traces the opium godown where Orwell's father had worked.

The attention it deserved didn't come until it was rediscovered by his admirers in 2003. Later in 2014, the Bihar government decided to preserve and restore it. A budget of about 59 lakhs was provisioned for the upscaling and beautification of the house, turning it into a museum.

The Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar took a personal interest in the project and was there for the museum's inauguration. A piece in The Guardian recounted an account of Orwell's son, Richard Blair, as saying that it was a matter of delight to have his father's old house restored and turned into a museum. It appeared through the article that despite Orwell's widespread popularity, modestly preceded by his readership, there hardly existed, or exists, any other museum dedicated to the author save the one in his Motihari birthplace.
