History

Dhondenling is a Tibetan refugee settlement in Kollegal, about 4 hours away from Bengaluru. It has a fascinating history dating back to the late 1960s when it was established as a home for Tibetan refugees seeking refuge in India. The settlement, which covers an area of 3,000 acres, was developed by the Mysore Resettlement and Development Agency (MYRADA) to help the Indian government rehabilitate Tibetans. Situated at a height of 3345 ft, at the foothills of Biligiriranga Hills, Dhondenling has evolved over the years into a vibrant community that preserves its Tibetan heritage while embracing the local culture of Karnataka. Its history is a testimony to the peaceful coexistence of different communities and their shared journey towards a better life.

Dhondenling is a beautiful settlement with a geography characterised by undulating hills, dense forests, and sparkling rivers that meander through the landscape. Tana Monastery

The Tana Monastery is located in Kollegal and is home to 70 monks. It lies within a compound of Tibetan refugee camps and is a spectacular sight to behold. Tana Dungsey Rinpoche inherited the Tana Monastery after the passing of his father in 2000. Since then, he has made it his heart project to refurbish and reconstruct the monastery so that the traditions of the Yelpa Kagyu tradition may flourish. The refurbishing plans include constructing a modern kitchen, a dining room, and living quarters for the monks. As of 2017, these plans were about 80 percent complete. The shrine room within the monastery accommodates 50 people.
