Maruthamalai, a famous hill temple from the 12th century, is located in Coimbatore. The temple was constructed by the Tamil monarchs of the Sangam period and dedicated to Lord Murugan. The temple is regarded as the seventh home of Lord Murugan. It is situated on the Maruthamalai hill, which contributes to its name – ‘Maruthamalai’ literally translates to ‘hill of the Marutha tree’. This hill is supposed to be rich in medicinal herbs that have various healing properties.

The Maruthamalai Temple showcases the Dravidian style of architecture that is typical of South Indian temples. The design of this 112-foot-tall steel statue of lord shiva was put forward by spiritual-cum-yoga guru Jagdish Vasudev, popularly known as Sadhguru. It is designed to inspire and encourage yoga, symbolising 112 paths to inner peace and self-transformation.

Situated at the foothills of the Velliangiri Mountains in Coimbatore, the serene backdrop of the mountains adds to the statue's spiritual ambience. The Adiyogi Statue is part of the Isha Foundation, a non-profit organisation founded by Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev. The Arulmigu Patteeswarar Swamy Temple was constructed in the 9th century by the Chola dynasty's kings at the place that was believed to be the spot where Lord Shiva himself performed the Tandav dance. The temple is considered one of the most important Shiva temples in the region.
