Sejal Kumar And Bharat Subramaniam’s Mussoorie Wedding: A Love Story That Found Its Way Back

Content creator Sejal Kumar and tech professional Bharat Subramaniam’s wedding in Mussoorie began, in a way, at another wedding. They had attended the same school in New Delhi but moved in different circles and had barely spoken to each other. Years later, they met again at a family celebration through a slightly complicated but useful connection: Subramaniam’s best friend, who happened to be Kumar’s cousin.

They became friends, lost touch and found their way back to each other in 2019, when a Facebook birthday notification prompted Kumar to message him. “We started talking again, and that’s how our relationship began,” said Kumar, whose YouTube channel has around 1.45 million subscribers.

What followed was a long-distance relationship, with Kumar in India and Subramaniam in New York. Marriage entered the conversation gradually, after four or five years. “There wasn’t one big moment,” she said. “It happened naturally as we became more settled in ourselves and felt ready for the next chapter.”

When it came time to decide where that chapter would begin, the mountains felt instinctive. The couple wanted the wedding to be within driving distance of Delhi for ease of travel; Mussoorie seemed like the perfect destination.

The couple decided on the JW Marriott Mussoorie Walnut Grove, their choice spurred by the property’s wonderful location in the lap of the mountains and the spectacular views it offers. They pictured their celebrations there, and the terrace eventually became the setting for the haldi.

“I still remember how much fun it was having everyone together for my brother’s destination wedding in Sri Lanka, with everyone together for a few days instead of just a few hours,” said Kumar.

In Mussoorie, everyone stayed under one roof and moved together from one celebration to the next. “Nobody missed a thing,” Kumar said. “We were partying from morning till 5 am every day.” Away from Delhi’s rhythms, the hill station gave the wedding a slower pace. The crisp air, winter light and mountain views became part of the experience, not merely a backdrop.

Working with wedding planners, the couple gave each event its own identity while allowing the setting to hold everything together. “We didn’t want to over-decorate,” Kumar said. “We wanted the landscape to be the hero.”

The haldi unfolded on the terrace that had first convinced them. The wedding ceremony, held in the hotel garden, was titled “Whispers of the Backyard.” Its inspiration came from Subramaniam’s Delhi home, where the couple spent winter afternoons whenever he returned from New York. It was also where he proposed.

“We wanted to recreate that feeling, to make it peaceful and really connected to nature,” Kumar said. The décor remained restrained, allowing the garden, trees and mountains to shape the mood.

That intimacy extended to the rituals. Kumar’s family is Sindhi, while Subramaniam’s is Tamil. Kumar’s mother wanted a chooda ceremony during the haldi, while Subramaniam’s parents wanted a Tamilian priest to conduct the marriage rites. “We were very happy to include both,” Kumar said. “It felt like the best way to honour both families.”

Food followed the same inclusive approach. With guests arriving from across India and overseas, the menu combined regional touches with North Indian, South Indian and continental dishes, offering a taste of the destination while ensuring everyone found something familiar.

The most meaningful elements were often the ones they created themselves. Kumar hand-painted the mountain landscape used in the save-the-date, and the couple designed the invitation together. At the mehendi, a photo wall displayed childhood pictures, including near-identical photographs of each receiving a “Best Personality” award in Class 1. “It felt like such a full-circle moment,” she said.

Mussoorie now occupies a different place in their personal geography. “I don’t think we’ll ever be able to think about Mussoorie the same way again,” Kumar said. What remains most vivid is not a single function, but the mountain view, the cool air and the feeling of having everyone they love together. “It’ll always be our wedding place.”
