OT Travel Itinerary: Your Two-Day Monsoon Guide To Kolad

A sleepy town situated in the Raigad district of Maharashtra, Kolad is a premier whitewater rafting destination which draws many visitors during the monsoon season. Besides that, it is a hub for treks and rappelling adventures due to its scenic location in the heart of the Sahyadri mountain range. The picturesque waterfalls of the area add to its beauty.

If you're planning a trip to Kolad soon, here's a complete two-day guide to the town.

Day 1

Morning

Start your first day by whitewater rafting on the Kundalika River. The 14km route offers a unique challenge in the monsoon when the waters swell, and you will have at least 90 minutes of pure excitement paddling against the currents. The rapids are graded as II and III on the difficulty level. Enjoy the beauty of the living world as you complete the route and follow the instructions of your guide at all times.

Next, head to the Devkund and Tamhini Ghat waterfalls which are nearly 37km away from Kolad. Reaching Devkund requires a three-hour trek so if you’re up for the challenge, and if the terrain is not too slippery or treacherous, then it makes for a splendid hike in the monsoon. Visitors can picnic here or take a bath under the roaring falls.

The Tamhini Ghat Waterfall cascades majestically during the monsoon seaso and has charming views of the Sahyadri mountain range. It is located only 9.5km from the Devkund Waterfall.

For those who are curious about rappelling a waterfall, now’s your chance. Waterfall rappelling is where you descend down a vertical slope with water falling all around you. Tour outfitters attach people to a harness and a belay ensures their safety. You will be soaked doing this unique activity but it’s the perfect way to experience the glory of the monsoon.

Afternoon

The Bhira Dam is located in the vicinity of the aforementioned waterfalls and is used to generate electricity for residents as part of the Bhira Hydroelectric Project. It is the perfect spot for a picnic and a place to relax after a hectic day of adventure. Take a boat ride on the smooth waters of the reservoir and capture its stunning beauty through photographs.

Evening

Wrap up your first day in Kolad by taking to the streets for a spot of shopping.  Stock up on necessary amenities and eat to your heart’s content at the Maratha Palace, Hotel Prabhakar or the Hotel Vijay Palace.

Day 2

Morning

Another day of whitewater rafting is on the cards. Have one more go at paddling against the rapids of the Kundalika River.

Alternatively, those who have had enough and want a different experience can embark on the Plus Valley Trek. The two to three-hour trek takes visitors through the Plus Valley which is located in the middle of four towering hills. Its name derives from the fact that when seen from above or far away, the valley resembles a plus sign. It is a popular trek with visitors to Kolad because of the breathtaking views of the Sahyadris. Furthermore, the region hums with greenery and lushness during the monsoon, and there are numerous waterfalls which begin their journey during this time. However, keep in mind that the water levels in the valley may make it impossible to do the 2.6km trek during the rainy season. Check with local guides regarding the safety of the trek first.

Afternoon

The serene ambience of Sutarwadi Lake beckons. One of the best places to visit in Kolad and a monsoon delight, people come here to escape from the hustle and bustle of city life and give in to the peace and tranquility of the place. It is a paradise for birdwatchers and is one of the best places to see the sunset, though its beauty can be enjoyed throughout the day. Rest here after another hectic day of adventure.

Next, it’s time to try ziplining. The view from above will give you a bird’s-eye perspective on the rich greenery of the place and allow you to see the Sahyadri in all her glory. Go on as many circuits of the ropeway as you can.

Evening

On your final evening in Kolad, consider one last adventure activity: bunjee jumping. With a platform mounted above the Kundalika, adventurers will plunge 40m after being outfitted with a safety harness. One of the most thrilling experiences anyone can have, it is perhaps the best way to wrap up your Kolad sojourn.

Getting There

The nearest airport and railhead to Kolad is the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (129km) and the Kolad Railway Station (KOL), respectively. There are taxis and buses which go to Kolad from Mumbai and Pune.
