Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu

About 40km from Chennai by road, Mahabalipuram is known for its sea beach and the rockcut temples. Interestingly, according to the Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships (DGLL), the log fire on one of the high rocks used to serve as a beacon in ancient times. The existing lighthouse, made of dressed stone, was built in 1900 and left unpainted so that it blended with the surroundings. The steep steps lead up to a mesmerising view of the sea and the city of Mahabalipuram.

Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu

The last point of the country provides the perfect spot to observe the meeting point of the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea. The lighthouse is about 30 meters high and built in 1971.

Minicoy, Lakshadweep

With beautiful, dense coconut trees flanking the structure on either side, this tall, imposing lighthouse overlooks the stunning turquoise waters of the sea on this little-known island. Officially known as the Minicoy South Lighthouse, it was formally inaugurated in 1885 and handed over to the Indian government in April 1956 by the British government, according to the DGLL website.
