The Geology Of Gandikota

The Gandikota Quartzite exhibits features like cross-stratification (including planar tabular and trough cross-stratification), ripple marks, and deformed cross-beds, indicating a shallow marine depositional environment. While quartzite is dominant, other rock types like granite can be found in the region, particularly in the underlying bedrock. The Gandikota Quartzite is considered to be of Paleoproterozoic age, though some studies suggest it might be younger. 

In September 2024, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) sent a list of 10 geological sites, including Gandikota, to the Indian government for inclusion in UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites.
