A Royal Continuum

The Queen’s Room at Stok Palace is open to guests today. But for His Highness Jigmed Wangchuk Namgyal, it is difficult to see it simply as a hotel room. His mother and grandmother once lived here, and the paintings on its walls are tied to his own memories of the palace.

“It is a very special room for me,” Namgyal said. Every decision, from fabrics and furnishings to how the room functions for a guest, therefore, becomes “a negotiation between its existing character and its potential use.”

That negotiation runs throughout the Stok Palace. The five-storeyed fortified structure sits in the Stok Range, overlooking the valley through which the Singey Sangpo, or Indus River, flows. Built in 1820 as a retreat from Leh, it has been the seat of Ladakh’s royal family for two centuries and remains Namgyal’s home. The palace museum opened to the public in 1980 with the blessings of the Dalai Lama; the heritage hotel followed in 2007.

Namgyal was initially hesitant about opening his personal space to travellers. But the need to maintain the ageing palace, and the opportunity to make Ladakh’s history more accessible, eventually outweighed that reluctance. “I live and breathe in this palace,” he said. “Taking care of it has been more of an inward journey.”

Living With The Past

Preserving a mud-and-brick palace while continuing to live in it brings its own compromises. Traditional Ladakhi roofs, for instance, were made of mud. Replacing them with corrugated sheets would make maintenance easier, but would also change the character of the building. For Namgyal, conservation instead requires understanding how vernacular materials can continue to work under changing conditions.

Even the plumbing tells that story. Pipes remain exposed because concealing them within mud walls could prove disastrous if a leak went undetected. Modern comforts have to be introduced without creating new risks for the old structure.

The same approach extends to the palace museum. Among its collection is the Queen’s yub-jhur (royal headdress) decorated with 401 pieces of uncut turquoise, coral and gold nuggets, along with an ancient crown and a knotted sword. But Namgyal does not want the museum to function simply as a display of royal possessions. He hopes local people will also recognise the value of objects that survive in their own homes, from old sewing machines to kitchen utensils, as part of Ladakh’s cultural record.

“Our goal is to keep the museum simple and somewhat quirky,” he said. “We want tourists to understand our culture. At the same time, the local community should study the collection and conduct research on it.”

Beyond The Palace

That interest in conservation has taken Namgyal beyond Stok. Working with local experts, he has also been involved in restoration efforts at monasteries, including Basgo and Sumda Chun.

But the conditions under which Ladakh’s heritage survives are changing. Receding glaciers and pressure on limited groundwater resources are one part of the problem. Increased rainfall in some areas presents another. Buildings and wall paintings created for a historically drier climate are now more vulnerable to seepage and moisture damage.

At Stok Palace, guests are encouraged to use water carefully, while the building itself must adapt without compromising the materials and character that define it.

For Namgyal, however, preservation is more than maintaining an old structure. Stok is still where his family lives, where rooms carry memories and where decisions about a wall, roof or piece of furniture can mean deciding what should change and what must remain. Two centuries after it was built, perhaps that is what makes Stok Palace unusual. It has not been frozen into a monument or completely remade as a hotel. It is still, first and foremost, a home learning how to live with its past.
