Pondicherry is a picturesque beach city on India's southeastern coast. Auroville Beach

Located around 12 km from the city, this beach gets its name from the Auroville township. Also known as Auro Beach, this peaceful beach is maintained by the Ashram. The absence of significant human presence means it is just perfect for seaside strolls on the soft black volcanic sand, hanging out soaking in the sunshine, or reading your latest book purchase. The waters are shallow here and you can go snorkelling or swimming if the mood strkes you.

Paradise Beach

Located at the confluence of the Bay of Bengal and the Chunnambar River, the scenic Paradise is one of the most popular beaches in Pondicherry. It's reached via a half-hour ferry ride through stunning backwaters lined with mangroves. Expect a more touristy ambience here, with stalls selling food and drinks, and people taking ATV and banana rides on the sands and jetskiing on the waters. People bring food along and have picnics in the thatched-roof open huts on the beach. To get here, you have to get to the Chunnambar Boat House and take a ferry from there.

Serenity Beach

Not widely known to the public, Serenity is a beautiful and serene beach that will immediately put you in a state of tranquillity. With the soothing sound of the sea, the slightly warm sand, and a delicious snack, the serene beach is a perfect place to relax and have a wonderful time alone or with your loved ones.

Promenade Beach

Like all beaches attached to a city - think Miramar in Goa - this is the most crowded one. It is also known as Rock Beach because of the jutting dark rock formations that line this stretch of beachfront in the city. The 1.2-kilometre-long stretch of sand starts from the War Memorial and ends at Dupleix Park on Goubert Avenue. It is very popular, with locals using it as a regular evening hangout. There are several cafes near the beach offering splendid views of the sea. Look out for the statue of Mahatma Gandhi which is a popular spot for selfie-taking folks. Adding to the atmosphere is an old lighthouse, and the remains of a pier.

Reppo Beach

If you are looking for peace far from the madding crowd, hit up Reppo Beach. Located in Pondicherry's Vaithikuppam region, it is relatively undiscovered. Come here before sunset and watch the fishermen's boats on the horizon silhouetted in the amazing light. The beach is around 10 kilometres from the Pondicherry Bus Stand and can be reached in 15-20 minutes.

To reach Pondicherry by air, the nearest airport is Chennai International Airport, located approximately 135 kilometres away. You can hire a taxi or take a bus to Pondicherry, which takes around 3-4 hours, depending on the traffic.
