Check Out This Rustic Women-Run Homestay In Goa

Curled up in Talde village of Goa (near Sancordem) is the heritage "Jungle Trails Homestay," an ideal model of eco-tourism and hospitality. This all women-run homestay, operational since 2017, draws patrons nationwide for its old-world charm and green experiences.

Another factor that adds to the place's allure is the wholesome food prepared by the village women. With ten women workers, the homestay arguably offers one of the best home-cooked food sojourns. "Neither Chinese nor Continental, our menu proudly offers traditional Indian home-cooked meals, showcasing the essence of ghar ka khana that sets us apart," Kanchan, a worker at the homestay, told OT.

Curated with rural warmth and locally available ingredients like coconut milk, kokum fruit, and spices, their Sol Kadhi, an appetiser served with rice, is a top pick among guests.

Guests' appreciation for their food makes these women happy, especially the compliments for their vegetarian platter. "We are not doing anything extraordinary. Our food is basic and very home-like. But the warmth and love of our guests is simply gratifying. When we cook the same food at home, nobody appreciates it. It is slightly demotivating," Kanchan added.

For these rural women, empowerment doesn't have to be in sensational acts; little gestures like acknowledgement are all they seek.

Manisha and nine other women working at the homestay are part of a Self-Help Group that enrolled them in the Goa government's "Stree Shakti Initiative" under the State Rural Livelihood Mission in 2016. With the idea of empowering these women in a remote setting with meagre avenues to earn a livelihood, the initiative has nurtured these women financially and personally.

"Other than the financial benefits, these women are getting to interact with all kinds of people, which is helping them build confidence," said Parag Rangnekar, owner of Mrugya Nature Retreat, which runs the homestay.

Work-Life Balance

A work-life "imbalance" is typically anticipated in a remote set-up when women work beyond domestic boundaries. However, the story is different in Taldem village. These women are balancing their personal and professional lives pretty well. For them, their husbands are their biggest strength. "We work as a team. My income is only adding to strengthening our finances. There is no male-female work dichotomy, and household chores are always a collaborative deal," Kanchan said.

Nestled amidst Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary, the stay experience involves nature walks and birdwatching tours, making it a perfect spot for wildlife photography. Visitors can also enjoy the scenic vistas of Talde and Tambdi Surla Waterfalls via organised trekking tours costing around INR 300.
