Celebrating the relationship between music and travel, the rock music festival 'Independence Rock' made a remarkable return last year after a nine-year pause and is poised for another edition this year. Renowned as India's oldest rock festival, the Mahindra Independence Rock is scheduled to grace Mumbai's Bayview Lawns in the Mazgaon area on November 4 and 5.
OT reached out to Subir Malik, the founder, organist, and manager for the legendary rock band Parikrama, all set to woo the audiences at the Mahindra Independence Rock Festival.

Your band's name, "Parikrama," translates to "circumambulation" or a pilgrimage in Sanskrit. Could you explain the significance of this name?
The name denotes the circle of life, signifying the cyclical nature of experiences. It symbolises the idea that nothing lasts forever—good times come and go, and the circle carries on.
Many of your songs are inspired by Indian culture, spirituality, and heritage. How does your music serve as a bridge between the modern and traditional aspects of India?

While many of our songs are inspired by Indian experiences, we write about everything we feel. We're even launching a brand new original inspired by "The Lord of the Rings." Our music is diverse and not solely limited to Indian culture.
Can you tell us how the wide range of geographic influences has shaped Mahindra Independence Rock's 29th edition lineup and what audiences can expect from this musical journey?
Having bands from diverse regions participating in this mecca of rock festivals is an incredible opportunity. It offers audiences a real treat. They'll not only see their favourite bands but also get exposed to immensely talented bands from all over the country, making the lineup incredibly vibrant and diverse.
Including bands from Kathmandu, Nepal, in this year's lineup adds an international flavour to the festival. What's the significance of cross-border collaborations?
It's brilliant news to have Nepali bands joining the lineup. This not only adds to the festival's international appeal but also elevates the popularity of "I Rock" in Nepal. Nepal boasts some of the world's best musicians, and its thriving rock scene makes this collaboration mutually deserved and beneficial.

Parikrama has been a prominent name in the Indian rock music scene for over three decades. What's the journey been like, and what keeps you motivated to create music year after year?
The journey has been incredible. It never feels like it's been that long. The band's motivation is fueled by the love for rock 'n' roll, always feeling like "this is just the beginning." It's the fire and passion for music that keeps the band together and rocking.

How do you think your music serves as a cultural bridge for travellers exploring India?
Until a decade ago, many people didn't even know about the existence of rock music in India. However, the presence of numerous amazing Indian bands now signed up with foreign management and labels shows how music acts as a cultural bridge, providing insights into the local culture.
Could you tell us about some of the most picturesque or unique locations where you've had the chance to play?

Destinations like Bhutan, Tawang, Mechukha, Meghalaya, Aizawl, and various international locations have provided incredible settings for our performances, enhancing the overall concert experience. We adore the North East of India, including places like Shillong, Mechukha, Aizwal, and Assam. The band's extensive travels to various locations have been a blessing, inspiring our music.
Your band has been known for its unique blend of rock music with Indian classical influences. How do you think this fusion has influenced your sound and made you stand out in the industry?
It all started with inspiration from an album called "Conversations" by Shri L. Subramanium and Mr. Stephane Grappelli in 1984. This led to the decision to incorporate the violin into the band. Experimenting with different instruments and enjoying the process have contributed to our unique sound.
Parikrama had the opportunity to perform at incredible venues and festivals worldwide. Could you share your most memorable experiences?

Touring the UK with Iron Maiden was a significant and special experience. Sharing the stage with such legends multiple times was like a dream come true. One of the most remarkable shows abroad was performing on the main stage at the Download Festival in 2007.
