Backpacker's Self-guided Adventure To Havasu Falls, The Hidden Gem Near The Grand Canyon

As an avid hiker and adventure traveller, I’m always on the lookout for new adventures. So, when I managed to snag camping permits to Havasu Falls in the Grand Canyon, a hidden gem known for its stunning blue-green waters and breathtaking  waterfalls, I was over the moon. After lots of physical and camping preparations, my husband and I set off on an unforgettable adventure to Havasupai Falls for my birthday. This journey was not only our first self-guided backpacking experience but also a testament to our endurance and spirit.

Visiting Havasupai

Havasupai, meaning “people of the blue-green waters,” perfectly captures the essence of this magical place. The Havasupai Tribe has called this area home for over 800 years and has done an incredible job preserving this natural wonder. Havasu Falls sits on the Havasupai Indian Reservation, not part of Grand Canyon National Park, so you need a camping permit or a reservation at the Havasupai Lodge to access the area. Permits are highly sought after and must be reserved online starting on February 1 each year.

Our adventure began at the Hualapai Hilltop, the starting point for the 10-mile hike to Supai Village. The descent into the canyon was both challenging and exhilarating, with each step bringing us closer to the heart of Havasupai. The anticipation of seeing the falls kept us motivated. After setting up our camp, our first destination was the iconic Havasu Falls. The sight of the turquoise waters contrasted with striking red rocks cascading over the travertine cliffs was even more breathtaking in person. The waters get their blue colour from the magnesium that occurs naturally in the waters that feed the falls. We spent hours relaxing by the falls, having lunch while soaking in the beauty and tranquility of the surroundings.

The next day, we ventured to Mooney Falls, the grandest of all waterfalls, known for its adventurous descent involving ladders and chains. The thrill of the descent was matched only by the awe-inspiring sight of the falls themselves. The powerful flow of water and the surrounding mist created a scene straight out of a dream. Our final stop was Beaver Falls, where the cascading  waters and lush surroundings provided a perfect spot for a leisurely hike and some quiet reflection. The hike to Beaver Falls is equally adventurous, with multiple stream crossings and ladder climbs.

Discovering Hidden Falls

One of the highlights of our trip was discovering Hidden Falls, a lesser-known gem that offered a peaceful retreat away from the more popular falls. This secluded spot was the cherry on top of the untouched beauty of Havasupai, and we felt privileged to witness it. The journey back to Hualapai Hilltop was challenging, especially hiking in the desert with blistered feet, but the memories of the past few days kept us motivated.

The stunning waterfalls, the challenging hikes, and the sense of achievement made it a birthday to remember. But this trip was more than just a birthday celebration; it was a journey of discovery and an adventure of a lifetime. Havasupai Falls is truly a paradise on Earth, where the stark desert landscape meets lush, tropical beauty. If you’re looking for a unique and rewarding adventure, Havasupai Falls should be at the top of your list.
