Zoos In Uttar Pradesh Shut Following Bird Flu Scare

In response to a H5 Avian Influenza (bird flu) health scare, all three zoological parks and the lion safari located in Uttar Pradesh (namely those in Lucknow, Kanpur, and Gorakhpur, along with the Lion Safari in Etawah) have been temporarily closed. This action follows the confirmation that a tigress at the Gorakhpur Zoo, which passed away on May 7, was infected with bird flu. Authorities are taking precautionary measures to ensure the safety of both the animals and visitors, implementing thorough health checks and monitoring protocols.

Zoos in Uttar Pradesh Close Temporarily

In light of the situation, the Central Zoo Authority has intervened by dispatching a five-member team of veterinary doctors and pathologists from renowned wildlife institutions to help assess and manage the ongoing crisis. This team aims to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tigress' death and implement necessary measures to prevent further cases of the disease.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed officials to maintain strict vigilance at all zoos across the state. During a meeting earlier this week, Adityanath emphasised that the safety of animals and birds in zoos, bird sanctuaries, national parks, wetlands, and even cow shelters must be the top priority. He instructed officials to implement all necessary preventive measures, strictly adhering to the guidelines issued by both the central and state governments to prevent the possible spread of the infection.

Investigations Underway

The team investigating the case is expected to submit a report within 15 days. This report will inform further decisions regarding animal care. The team consists of representatives from the Ministry of Animal Husbandry and Dairy, the Wildlife Health Management Department, the Wildlife Institute of India in Dehradun, and ICAR locations in Bareilly and Bhopal, along with pathologists.
