Nearly 90 years after archaeologists first excavated Vaishya Tekri in Ujjain, the Madhya Pradesh government is pushing for fresh archaeological work at the site. The mound is believed to contain the remains of a large Buddhist stupa that the 1938–39 excavation estimated at 350 feet in diameter and at least 100 feet in height. By comparison, the Great Stupa at Sanchi is approximately 54 feet high. Although the figures have led to comparisons with Sanchi, the actual size and plan of the monument need to be established through proper excavation.
