In a step towards bolstering tourism and aiming for the upliftment of local economies, the Uttar Pradesh government has proposed to turn 234 villages into tourist hotspots. The program seeks to highlight the state's rich cultural history, traditional crafts, and rural way of life. The project also eyes the establishment of sustainable tourism models that not only maintain regional customs but also give locals new sources of income by combining infrastructure development with community involvement. In the initial phase, 93 villages have been selected for the redevelopment.
The Directorate of Tourism has signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with the State Rural Livelihood Mission (UPSRLM) and the Manyawar Kanshiram Institute of Tourism Management. These collaborations aim to identify infrastructure gaps, mobilise communities, and organise capacity-building programs to promote sustainable rural tourism.
The new initiative spans a large range of divisions, including Ayodhya, Varanasi, Lucknow, Devipatan and Chitrakoot. In the first phase, about 92 villages have been earmarked for development with a focus on enhancing infrastructure and introducing homestays in a bid to expose tourists with authentic rural experiences.
Several villages hold historical and cultural importance. For instance, Shringverpur in Prayagraj is believed to be the site where Hindu deity Ram met Nishadraj, featuring attractions like Shri Ram Ghat and the remains of Nishadraj’s fort. Similarly, Jait in Mathura offers insights into local folklore, including the Kaliya Naag Temple.
Tourists will have the opportunity to engage in various activities such as pottery-making, boating, and exploring local handicrafts. Homestays and farm stays equipped with modern amenities will provide comfortable accommodations, while local cuisines and traditional clothing will offer immersive cultural experiences.
By integrating tourism with the rural economy, the initiative aims to generate employment opportunities and empower local communities. The focus on community-based tourism ensures that the benefits of increased tourist footfall are equitably distributed among residents.
