Uttar Pradesh To Launch Water Excursions With Catamaran Boats In Ayodhya, Kashi And Mathura

Uttar Pradesh is banking on increasing its burgeoning tourism sector with the expansion of water tourism initiatives in cities like Ayodhya, Kashi and Mathura. With the addition of open catamaran boats that are equipped with modern amenities, the state hopes to rival popular water tourism destinations like Goa and Kerala.

An agreement with the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) will see each city receive two catamaran boats. Currently, Ayodhya and Kashi have received one each, with a seating capacity of up to 50 people. The Uttar Pradesh State Tourism Corporation has requested that future catamarans be open-air, complete with a deck, pantry, toilets and other essential facilities. These features will allow tourists to fully immerse themselves in the picturesque surroundings while enjoying a comfortable and scenic water journey.

In addition to the catamarans, electric boats were recently handed over to Prayagraj by the IWAI, further expanding the state’s water-based travel options. These include two mini-cruise boats, seating 30 passengers each, and six motorboats, which can accommodate six tourists, along with two rescue boats. All boats are expected to be operational following the monsoon season.

Uttar Pradesh Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh emphasised the state’s rapid progress in the tourism sector, noting that more than 480 million tourists visited its world-renowned religious, spiritual, and ecotourism attractions last year. He highlighted that the state is actively working on various tourism projects, including rural tourism, agri-tourism, and water sports.

Singh pointed out the immense potential for water sports in Uttar Pradesh and mentioned that significant strides are being made to develop this sector. He also noted that tourists from across India and the globe will soon have many options to explore in the state. With the arrival of open catamaran boats, visitors will soon enjoy refreshing water excursions while taking in the scenic landscapes of Ayodhya, Kashi, and Mathura.

Meanwhile, Mukesh Kumar Meshram, the Principal Secretary of the Tourism and Culture Department and Director General of UP Tourism told OT, "Uttar Pradesh has established the UP State Waterways Authority to harness the vast potential of our river systems. With the Ganges stretching from Bijnore to Ballia, flowing through 27 districts, and numerous perennial rivers across the state, we are embracing water transportation, sports, and cruising. This initiative is eco-friendly, sustainable, and economical, maximising our natural resources for diverse and beneficial uses."
