In a big move for Indian travellers, Razorpay has announced that UPI payments will soon be accepted in Malaysia, marking a new chapter in India’s fintech story. The initiative comes through Razorpay’s Malaysian arm, Curlec, in collaboration with NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) — the global wing of the National Payments Corporation of India. 

The partnership, formalised at the Global Fintech Fest 2025, is more than a business milestone — it’s a step toward making global travel smoother and more cashless for Indians abroad.

No More Currency Chaos

Imagine landing in Kuala Lumpur, grabbing a kopi at a local café, and paying for it with the same UPI app you use at home. That’s the convenience this move brings. 

Millions of Indians visiting Malaysia will soon be able to make instant, secure payments at local shops, hotels, and restaurants using familiar apps like PhonePe, Paytm, or Google Pay. No need to fumble with foreign currency, swipe international cards, or pay extra conversion fees — just scan and pay in seconds.

In 2024, over a million Indian tourists visited Malaysia, spending an impressive INR 110 billion — a 71.7% increase from the previous year. With travel between the two countries booming, this integration couldn’t have come at a better time.

Boost For Malaysian Merchants

The benefits doesn’t stop with Indian travellers and tourists alone. Local merchants in Malaysia — from souvenir stalls in Penang to fine-dining restaurants in Kuala Lumpur — will also gain access to a new and growing customer base. 

Payments made by Indian users will be processed through Razorpay Curlec’s platform, with settlements happening seamlessly in Malaysian Ringgit (RM). For businesses, it means fewer payment hurdles and happier customers who can pay the way they prefer.
