The desert landscape outside Riyadh is preparing for a new chapter in luxury travel. The Oberoi Sukoonvilas, Wadi Safar, is set to become the first hotel in Wadi Safar when it welcomes guests in the first quarter of 2027. Located around 30 minutes from Riyadh and close to the historic district of Diriyah, the resort is being built around the landscape, architecture and cultural history of central Saudi Arabia.

For Oberoi Hotels & Resorts, the project also marks its entry into Saudi Arabia. The resort will sit on more than 37 acres atop a 70-metre escarpment, with 60 standalone villas and 10 branded residences. Its location puts it within easy reach of At-Turaif, the UNESCO World Heritage Site that once served as the first capital of the Saudi Dynasty.

A New Luxury Address Takes Shape In Wadi Safar

Wadi Safar is being developed as part of the wider Diriyah transformation, with the landscape itself playing a central role in the destination's identity. Desert valleys and dramatic escarpments form the setting for plans that bring together hospitality, heritage, sport, wellness, and nature.

The Oberoi Sukoonvilas is designed by Aedas, with interiors by design studio Blink. The architecture takes inspiration from Najdi traditions, with shaded courtyards, water features and spaces designed to connect the interiors with the surrounding landscape. The resort's villas will incorporate Najdi design references, high ceilings and views towards indigenous planting.

Vikram Oberoi, CEO, Oberoi Hotels & Resorts, said: “Wadi Safar presents a rare opportunity to create a resort experience that is deeply rooted in the history, culture, and natural beauty of its surroundings.”

Wellness is another major part of the plan. ASMI by Oberoi will anchor the resort's wellness programme, with hammams, indoor wellness pools and fitness facilities. There will also be a 65-metre infinity pool overlooking Wadi Safar.

“The Oberoi Sukoonvilas has been thoughtfully conceived as a sanctuary of understated luxury, where architecture, landscape and hospitality come together in harmony,” he added.

Dining is being given equal attention. Yatra will focus on contemporary Indian cuisine curated by Michelin-starred chef Rohit Ghai, while Linnet will bring artisanal pastries and café culture under pastry chef Lily Vanilli. Beyla will serve international cuisine, complemented by a poolside dining venue overlooking the escarpment.

The culinary programme is particularly interesting in the context of the resort's India-Saudi Arabia connection. The project intends to bring the two cultures together through food, architecture and hospitality, rather than treating the local setting as a decorative backdrop.

Wadi Safar’s Setting Is Steeped In Saudi History

To understand the appeal of Wadi Safar, it helps to look beyond the resort. Nearby Diriyah is closely tied to the history of the Saudi state. At-Turaif, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was founded in the 15th century and became the first capital of the Saudi Dynasty. Its earthen palaces and fortified structures are significant examples of Najdi architecture, particularly the use of adobe as a building material suited to the desert environment.

For visitors, At-Turaif is likely to be one of the defining cultural excursions from a stay at Sukoonvilas. The historic district can be paired with a visit to Bujairi Terrace, Diriyah's contemporary dining and lifestyle precinct overlooking the heritage landscape.

Food is already becoming a major part of the Diriyah experience. Bujairi Terrace currently has restaurants spanning Italian, French, European and international cuisines, alongside cafés and Saudi offerings. For a taste of the region, travellers can also seek out Najdi specialities such as jareesh, a cracked-wheat dish, kabsa and traditional date-based sweets, while the wider Riyadh dining scene has expanded well beyond traditional Saudi fare.

What To Explore Around Wadi Safar

A stay here will lend itself to a mix of heritage and landscape experiences. At-Turaif should be high on the itinerary for its adobe palaces, old streets and connection to the history of Diriyah. Bujairi Terrace is a natural stop for an evening meal, particularly for its views towards the heritage district.

The wider Diriyah area also follows Wadi Hanifah, the valley system that historically supported the oasis settlement around At-Turaif. UNESCO notes the close relationship between the wadi, its water resources, agriculture and the development of the historic settlement.

Travellers can also use the resort as a base for exploring Riyadh, from its contemporary restaurants and galleries to historic landmarks. For those interested in Saudi Arabia's changing tourism landscape, the contrast is part of the appeal: ancient adobe architecture, date palms and desert valleys sit within driving distance of one of the region's fastest-changing urban centres.

The Oberoi Sukoonvilas is therefore arriving at an interesting point in Wadi Safar's development. When it opens in the first quarter of 2027, it will not simply add another luxury address near Riyadh. It will be the first hotel to welcome guests in a destination still defining its hospitality identity, with the landscape and history of Diriyah forming the backdrop.
