If you happen to be in the vicinity of Champakkulam, in the Alappuzha district of Kerala, you could be witness this week to the inaugural boat race that sets off a whole season of race frenzy in the state. Though the snake boat race of Ernakulam is the more famous one, popping by Champakkulam for this event (July 11, 2014) is definitely recommended, because aside from the boat race, the town also has one of the oldest churches in India, St Mary&rsquos Syro-Malabar Catholic Forane Church, a beautiful structure.
