The decision to reintroduce the special mountain train service stems from the UNESCO heritage status of the route, featuring 206 bridges and 16 caves. Travellers can relish the stunning scenery while enjoying the journey through the landscapes of Nilgiris.

During the summer season, the special mountain train will operate between Coonoor and Ooty on four designated days: Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. The Salem Division of Southern Railway has planned departures on Fridays and Sundays for the Mettupalayam-Ooty route and on Saturdays and Sundays for the Ooty-Mettupalayam route.
