South Africa Introduces 48-Hour Digital Travel Permit For Indians: Who's Eligible And How To Apply

Planning a South African holiday may soon involve far less paperwork. The country has rolled out a new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system for eligible Indian passport holders, allowing travellers to complete the entire application online and receive a decision within 24 to 48 hours.

The new system replaces the need for a traditional visa sticker for eligible visitors and is aimed at making short-term travel to South Africa quicker and more convenient.

A Fully Digital Alternative To A Traditional Visa

The Electronic Travel Authorisation is a passport-linked digital permit that allows eligible travellers to visit South Africa without obtaining a physical visa sticker.

It is valid for short visits of up to 90 days for tourism and certain business or visitor purposes. The authorisation also permits multiple entries during its validity period, although it cannot be used for employment or extended stays in the country.

Once approved, the ETA is electronically linked to the traveller's passport and can be verified digitally at immigration.

Indians Are Among The First Eligible Travellers

The programme has initially been opened to travellers holding ordinary passports from four countries—India, China, Indonesia, and Mexico.

For now, ETA holders must enter South Africa through one of three international airports:

• O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg

• Cape Town International Airport

• Lanseria International Airport

South African authorities have said the list of eligible entry points will expand over time.

Important Eligibility Requirements

Before beginning the application, travellers should ensure they meet the basic eligibility criteria. The primary applicant using South Africa's standard digital ETA process must be at least 18 years old. In addition, the ordinary passport used for the application must have a minimum of 19 months' validity remaining from the date of registration. Passports with less than 19 months' validity will not be eligible for the online registration process.

The Online Application Process

Applying for the ETA does not require a visit to a visa application centre. Instead, travellers can complete every step from home.

Applicants first need to create an account on South Africa's official ETA portal using an eligible ordinary passport. They must then upload a copy of the passport they intend to travel with, fill in their personal and travel details, and complete a biometric identity check by taking a live selfie using a smartphone.

After paying the required fee online, the application can be submitted for processing. Successful applicants receive a digital confirmation and QR code, while the ETA is automatically linked to their passport.

Approval Expected Within Two Days

One of the biggest changes introduced under the new system is the turnaround time.

According to South African authorities, most ETA applications are expected to be processed within 24 to 48 hours. By shifting the entire process online, the country hopes to reduce paperwork and make travel planning easier for international visitors.
