Caravan tourism is an emerging trend in India, offering a unique way to explore new destinations with the comfort and freedom of a home on wheels. State tourism authorities are increasingly supporting this trend by launching new policies, constructing caravan parks, and providing resources for caravan-friendly travel. The coastal town of Puducherry, a popular travel destination, is the latest to embrace this trend.

Be A Mobile Tourist

Puducherry has implemented an initiative which will issue permits for caravan vehicles registered in Puducherry as well as for those from other states. You will be able to rent these vehicles for a duration of three days, seven days, or thirty days. Tax rates vary depending on the type of vehicle. Light and medium vehicles will have charges ranging from Rs 860 to Rs 4,200. And for heavy vehicles, it will be Rs 1,340 to Rs 8,800.

Caravanning offers a sense of adventure and flexibility, allowing travelers to explore without the constraints of scheduled hotel stays. This initiative may particularly appeal to those who love road trips and sustainable travel enthusiasts who prefer a lighter footprint.

The States With Caravan Travel

Travelling in a caravan is perfect for those who enjoy exploring new and interesting places without the confines of traditional hotel stays. Various state tourism authorities have launched caravan tourism projects that allow visitors to rent fully equipped vehicles with modern furnishings and amenities. Several caravan parks have been established in India in recent years, serving as secure overnight parking areas for these vehicles.

In June 2020, the Karnataka government launched a caravan tourism policy. People can hire a fully-equipped vehicle with convertible beds for four, a shower, a modern toilet, a smart TV, and a music system. As for meals on board, a kitchenette including a refrigerator, freezer and microwave is also available.

In 2022, Kerala Tourism introduced a comprehensive and stakeholder-friendly Caravan Tourism Policy. This policy has two major components: Tourism Caravans, which are specially designed vehicles for travel, leisure, and accommodation, and Caravan Parks, which are designated areas where visitors can park these vehicles. These parks allow visitors to spend a day, night, or even longer while exploring the destination.

In March 2023, the state government announced the launch of caravan tourism as one of the means to promote tourism beyond the beaches of Goa. "The Homestay and Caravan Policy introduced by our government aims to popularise the hinterland tourism sector by providing support and opening new avenues for growth, all of which should be availed by women entrepreneurs," said Pramod Sawant. Maharashtra too has announced a caravan tourism policy that will allow camper vans, caravans, and trailers of all sizes to be hosted at designated parks throughout the state. This two-part policy—which includes both caravan provisions and caravan parks—aims to enhance tourists' experience of Maharashtra's natural beauty and various attractions. Additionally, it is expected to create local employment opportunities within the tourism sector.
