Shillong’s annual date with pink is getting louder this year. The Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival will return on November 20 and 21, 2026, with American stars Khalid, Swae Lee, and Boys Like Girls announced as the first international headliners. And there is another big change: the festival is moving to a new permanent home in New Shillong.

For a festival that began by celebrating Meghalaya’s autumn cherry blossoms, the music has become almost as much of a draw as the flowers. The 2026 edition looks set to continue that trajectory, with two more international headliners still to be announced.

Khalid, whose best-known tracks include “Young Dumb & Broke,” “Location,” and “Better,” will bring his R&B-pop sound to Shillong. The seven-time Grammy-nominated singer will be joined by Swae Lee, the rapper and singer known both as one half of Rae Sremmurd and for his global collaboration with Post Malone on “Sunflower.”

Then there is Boys Like Girls, a rather different but equally nostalgic proposition. The American pop-punk band, formed in 2005, is known for songs including “The Great Escape,” “Thunder,” and “Love Drunk.” Their addition gives the festival a distinctly 2000s pop-rock flavour alongside its R&B and hip-hop acts.

These are only the first names. Organisers have confirmed that two more international headliners will be announced, meaning the final bill is still taking shape. More national and regional performers are also expected to be revealed closer to the festival.

New Shillong Highland Grounds Will Host The Festival

The other major announcement is the festival’s new address. After several editions at venues including Shillong’s Polo Grounds, the Cherry Blossom Festival will move to the New Shillong Highland Grounds, a new permanent venue allocated by the Meghalaya government for large-scale concerts, festivals, and events. The 2026 festival will be among its first major showcases.

The move is partly about scale. The new grounds are around 30 minutes from Shillong and are being planned with multiple entry and exit points, parking facilities and a dedicated traffic and mobility plan. Organisers say the location should make it easier for audiences travelling from Shillong as well as from Jowai, Assam, and other neighbouring areas.

The change also fits into Meghalaya’s larger push towards a concert economy, with major music events being used to bring visitors into the state while creating opportunities for local businesses, vendors, artists and the wider tourism sector. The Cherry Blossom Festival has become one of the state's biggest annual music and tourism events.

Tickets are scheduled to go on sale on September 4 at 6 PM, with single-day tickets starting at INR 2,500, inclusive of taxes, through RockskiTickets.

What To Expect At Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival 2026

The name may promise flowers, but the Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival has long been considerably more than a photo opportunity under pink trees. The event brings together live music, fashion, food, art, and cultural performances, with local talent sharing the stage and festival space with international acts. Meghalaya Tourism describes it as a celebration of the state’s culture through music, fashion, food, and art.

The blossoms themselves are the reason for the timing. Shillong’s famous autumn blooms come from the wild Himalayan cherry (Prunus cerasoides), which flowers around October and November. Unlike Japan’s more familiar spring sakura season, Meghalaya’s cherry blossom spectacle arrives as the hills move towards winter.

That makes November a particularly good time to explore Shillong beyond the festival grounds, too. The city’s cherry trees are part of the wider landscape, while the festival has developed into a showcase for Meghalaya’s music and creative communities.

The festival dates back to 2016, when it was launched as a tourism initiative by the Meghalaya government with support from the Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development. Since then, it has grown from a celebration centred on the blossoms into a sizeable cultural and music event attracting visitors from across India and overseas.

Its international ambitions have grown along with it. In 2024, Japan became an official partner country and a Japan Zone was introduced, adding another layer of cultural exchange to the festival. The 2024 edition recorded a footfall of 58,000, according to Meghalaya Tourism.

Last year’s edition pushed the concert credentials further, with Jason Derulo, The Script, Tyga, Diplo, Nora Fatehi, and Aqua among the performers. The 2026 line-up, beginning with Khalid, Swae Lee, and Boys Like Girls, suggests that Meghalaya is not planning to turn the volume down anytime soon.

With a new permanent venue, three international names already confirmed and two more still under wraps, the Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival 2026 is shaping up to be as much about the music as the blossoms. And come November, Shillong will have both.
