Sawan Shivratri 2025: Ancient Panchmukhi Shivaling Unearthed In UP Village, Triggers Devotional Fervour

A rare five-faced shivaling, known as a Panchmukhi Shivaling, was uncovered on Tuesday morning during the excavation of a pond in Sarai Piparia village, located in the Dataganj tehsil, according to reports. The intricately carved marble shivaling was discovered nearly six feet underground as a bulldozer carried out digging operations.

According to reports, Mahant Parmatma Das Maharaj of the Papad Brahmadev Mandir stated that the shivaling is estimated to be around 300 years old. The shivaling emerged unexpectedly during the excavation, quickly drawing attention and sparking curiosity among locals. Strangely enough, the discovery coincides with Sawan Shivratri, which is set to be observed on July 23, adding that extra layer of significance for many.

As is common with such finds in India, the discovery rapidly led to religious fervour, with large crowds from nearby villages flocking to the site. This surge in public interest prompted authorities to deploy police and revenue officials to maintain order and secure the area. Environmental activist Shipra Pathak, known for her work with the Narmada Bachao Andolan, was also reportedly present at the time of the discovery.

A Panchmukhi Shivaling is a sacred symbol of Shiva featuring five faces, each representing a distinct aspect of the divine and the cosmos. These five faces—Vamadeva, Tatpurusha, Aghora, Sadyojata, and Ishana—symbolize creation, preservation, destruction, concealment, and revelation. They are aligned with the cardinal directions and the zenith: Vamadeva (east), Tatpurusha (west), Aghora (south), Sadyojata (north), and Ishana (zenith).

Each face of the shivaling also corresponds to one of the five elements: earth, water, fire, air, and ether. Beyond the physical, the Panchmukhi Shivaling embodies deep metaphysical concepts such as the five senses, five koshas (sheaths of existence), and five vital life energies (pranas). As a powerful spiritual icon, it represents the totality of existence and the multidimensional nature of Shiva’s presence in the universe.

While claims have been made about the relic being hundreds of years old, no formal verification of its age or origins has been carried out. Without proper documentation or investigation, such assertions remain speculative. As with many similar discoveries, the immediate rush to assign historical or religious significance can obscure the need for careful examination.
