Rare 13th Century Hebrew Tombstone Discovered In Tamil Nadu

In Ramanathapuram, Tamil Nadu, a significant archaeological find has brought to light an ancient Hebrew tombstone dating back to 1224 or 1225 AD. The discovery sheds light on a forgotten Jewish community in southern India. This find holds great importance as it predates the oldest known Hebrew tombstone in India, which was discovered in Chanmangalam, Kerala.

Hathim Ali, a chemical engineer and history aficionado from Ramanathapuram, uncovered the tombstone on a friend's farm. Recognising its potential significance, he promptly sought expert analysis.

The Inscription

The tombstone was deciphered by Tawfik Zakaria, a scholar of Jewish history and a calligrapher fluent in Hebrew and other Semitic languages. Zakaria, born in Cochin, has dedicated his life to preserving the rich cultural tapestry of Jewish history. The inscription on the tombstone corresponds to the date "A of Shvat 1536 or 1537 of the Seleucid period," which, when converted, dates to approximately January 1, 1224 AD, or January 18, 1225 AD.

Zakaria's preliminary analysis of the tombstone strongly suggests a profound influence of Yemenite Jewish culture in its design. Despite some damage to parts of the inscription, Zakaria uncovered the name "Nehemiah." Further research is essential to unveil additional details about the deceased and the broader historical significance of the tombstone.
