A holiday is usually planned around a destination, an experience or simply the need to get away for a few days. But for a growing number of travellers, there is another interesting consideration to add to the itinerary. The perfect photograph.
Pose-cations, or holidays planned around professional photoshoots, are gaining popularity among couples who want to mark milestones such as honeymoons, anniversaries, and babymoons in memorable settings. Instead of booking a photographer separately or squeezing in a shoot during a holiday, travellers are increasingly looking for trips that combine the two.
According to Pickyourtrail, photoshoot-led travel searches on its platform have grown by 10 per cent year-on-year. Thailand has emerged as a popular choice for couples, while Bengaluru accounts for nearly a quarter of the company's pose-cation bookings. The trend suggests that for some travellers, the photographs are becoming as much a part of the holiday as the destination itself.
The idea of travelling for photographs is hardly new. Pre-wedding shoots have long taken couples to beaches, palaces, mountains, and other scenic locations. What is changing is the range of occasions around which these trips are being planned.
"Photographs are increasingly becoming an integral part of the holiday experience, rather than something planned separately," says Hari Ganapathy, co-founder and CEO of Pickyourtrail. What began largely as a pre-wedding concept is now extending to honeymoons, anniversaries, babymoons, and trips planned simply to create Instagram-worthy moments.

The appeal is easy to understand. A couple celebrating an anniversary might want more than a dinner reservation, while honeymooners may prefer to return with professional photographs of their first trip together. For expectant parents, a babymoon offers an opportunity to document a particular phase of life.
In each case, the destination becomes part of the memory being created. The photoshoot is not necessarily the only reason to travel, but it has a more prominent place in the planning process.
The demand appears particularly strong among couples in India's major cities. Bengaluru contributes nearly 25 per cent of Pickyourtrail's pose-cation bookings, followed by Delhi at 20–22 per cent and Chennai at 18–20 per cent.
The numbers suggest that this is not limited to one city or a particular kind of celebration. Couples are looking for ways to combine travel with occasions that matter to them, while making room in their itineraries for professional photography.
The typical traveller is also willing to spend on the experience. According to Pickyourtrail, the median age of couples booking these holidays is 32. They spend around INR 1 lakh per person on trips lasting six to seven nights.
This places pose-cations within the larger market for personalised travel, where itineraries are increasingly shaped around individual interests and milestones. Rather than choosing a destination first and then figuring out the details later, some travellers are looking for trips that combine accommodation, sightseeing, and specific experiences into a single package.
For couples considering a pose-cation abroad, Thailand offers a combination of scenic variety, accessibility, and value.
In Phuket, locations such as Promthep Cape and Ao Sane Beach offer coastal backdrops, while Bangkok provides a more urban setting. Couples can choose between the two depending on the kind of photographs they want, without having to build an entirely separate trip around the shoot.
Accessibility also helps. Thailand is a relatively short flight from most major Indian cities, making it a practical choice for travellers who want an international holiday without spending too much time in transit.
Cost is another consideration. Ganapathy estimates that a pre-wedding or couple photoshoot in India can cost INR 1.25 lakh to INR 1.5 lakh per couple once photography, travel and accommodation are factored in.
However, a suitable pose-cation destination needs to offer more than a photogenic backdrop. Travellers also need to consider how easily they can move between locations, whether the trip offers enough to do beyond the shoot, and how comfortably the photography fits into the itinerary.

Pose-cations also tell us something about how people want to remember their holidays. For many, it is about exploring a new place while capturing moments they can look back on later. The idea is to enjoy the trip and come home with photographs to remember it by, without spending the entire holiday chasing the perfect shot.
For travel companies, this is an opportunity to bring professional photography, sightseeing and personalised itineraries together. Ganapathy sees pose-cations as part of a growing interest in holidays planned around special occasions. He believes the trend could eventually extend beyond couples to include family holidays, solo trips and other milestones.
Pose-cations may still be a niche trend, but they reflect a simple idea. Travellers want holidays that feel personal and give them something to remember. And sometimes, that means choosing a destination not just for the experience, but also for the photographs they can bring back.
