Several of Sardinia's most popular beaches have introduced advance reservation systems, daily visitor limits and entry fees as authorities step up efforts to tackle overtourism and protect fragile coastal ecosystems.

The new rules mean travellers planning a summer holiday on the Mediterranean island may have to book their beach visit days or even weeks in advance. Without a reservation, visitors could be turned away even after travelling to the destination.

Why Sardinia Is Restricting Beach Access

Sardinia, Italy's second-largest island, is famous for its white sand, turquoise waters and dramatic coastline. Each summer, the island attracts thousands of visitors, and the growing crowds have put pressure on its natural environment.

Local authorities say the restrictions are designed to reduce overcrowding, protect sand dunes and coastal vegetation, and preserve the island's beaches for the future. Instead of allowing unlimited access, several beaches now cap the number of visitors allowed each day.

The beach allows 1,500 visitors per day. According to reports, 500 slots are available for booking well in advance, while the remaining 1,000 spots are released two days before the visit. The advance reservation slots have reportedly already sold out through mid-September, underscoring how popular the beach remains.

Another famous destination, Cala Goloritzé, also operates a reservation system from April to October. Visitor numbers are limited to 250 people at a time, and bookings open 72 hours before the visit date.

Other beaches have also introduced caps on visitors. Su Sirboni Beach allows a maximum of 786 visitors per day, while Cala Brandinchi is limited to 1,447 visitors per day. At beaches without an online booking system, authorities recommend arriving early, as entry is stopped once the daily capacity is reached.

Overall, around 16 beaches and coves across Sardinia have adopted reservation systems, visitor limits or similar access controls to better manage tourism.

A Beach Day May Cost More Than Before

Apart from reservation fees, travellers may also find beach visits becoming more expensive in Italy.

Roughly one-third of mainland Italy's coastline is now managed by private beach clubs, many of which charge entrance fees. While Italian law allows visitors to bring their own food and drinks, some private beach clubs reportedly do not permit outside refreshments, which adds to the overall cost of a day at the beach.
