Orchha Moves Closer To World Heritage Status As UNESCO Accepts Dossier

Madhya Pradesh's Orchha is one step closer to becoming a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Recently, the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board prepared a detailed dossier to nominate Orchha's group of historic monuments for inclusion in UNESCO's prestigious World Heritage List, and the Indian government has approved it for the 2027-28 nomination.

The Indian Ambassador to Paris, Vishal V. Sharma, formally submitted the nomination to the Director of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre, Lazare Eloundou Assomo. This is an exciting achievement for Madhya Pradesh, as Orchha could become India's only state-protected World Heritage Site once UNESCO officially declares it.

Sheo Shekhar Shukla, the Principal Secretary for Tourism and Culture in Madhya Pradesh, expressed pride in this milestone. He highlighted the efforts made under Chief Minister Mohan Yadav to preserve the state's historical heritage and enhance tourism facilities.

Orchha is famous for its unique architectural style and rich historical importance, and this recognition would further elevate its status globally, attracting more international tourists. Every year, India recommends one of its cultural treasures to be nominated for UNESCO's World Heritage List. The Khajuraho temple complex, Sanchi's stupas, and Bhimbetka rock shelters from Madhya Pradesh are already part of the list. Other significant sites from the state, including Gwalior Fort and Bhedaghat, are also awaiting their turn. Orchha's nomination adds to this rich list.

The process to get Orchha nominated has been in motion for five years, with the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board submitting proposals for Orchha in 2019. Collaborating with experts, the board prepared the dossier, which was successfully submitted for UNESCO's review.

Orchha's heritage is something special. Known for its Bundela architecture, the town boasts remarkable landmarks like Jahangir Mahal, Raja Ram Temple, Chaturbhuj Temple, and the Orchha Fort complex, all nestled along the scenic Betwa River.

UNESCO recognition for Orchha will highlight its cultural and historical significance, boosting international and domestic tourism and stimulating the local economy. It will create new job opportunities for the local community, attract global support for conservation, and raise awareness of local crafts and cultural products. Orchha will also become a hub for research and studies while promoting sustainable and eco-friendly tourism practices to preserve its heritage for future generations.
