Odisha Bans Single-Use Plastic in Parks & Sanctuaries From April 1

In a significant move towards environmental conservation, the Odisha government has implemented a ban on single-use plastic within national parks, tiger reserves, wildlife sanctuaries, and eco-tourism sites in the state, effective April 1. This measure, issued by Chief Wildlife Warden Susanta Nanda, the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife), underscores the government's commitment to promoting eco-tourism and the reader's role in preserving these pristine areas.

While the use of plastic water bottles will be prohibited within protected forest areas, the government has taken steps to ensure the convenience of tourists. Alternative drinking water facilities will be arranged, and visitors bringing food items wrapped in plastic will be advised to dispose of the wraps in designated garbage bins. This order, issued by Chief Wildlife Warden Susanta Nanda, the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife), aims to maintain the cleanliness of these protected areas and provide a pleasant experience for visitors.

All generated garbage from visitors, nature camps, and other locations within protected areas will be disposed of following existing guidelines. In a letter to regional chief conservators of forests, divisional forest officers, and deputy directors of Similipal Tiger Reserve (STR) and Nandankanan Zoo, Nanda instructed them to widely publicise the plastic ban order to minimise inconvenience for tourists starting April 1.

Under the leadership of Chief Wildlife Warden Susanta Nanda, the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife), the Odisha government is determined to enforce the plastic ban. Violation of the order may lead to arrest, imprisonment, and fines, underscoring the government's seriousness in curbing plastic pollution. Resorts and restaurants will also be informed about the ban, and the forest department will collaborate with the Odisha State Pollution Control Board and the district administration to ensure strict compliance.
