Nobu Expands To Eastern Algarve With Luxury Hotel

Nobu Hospitality is expanding its presence in Portugal with plans for a new luxury hotel, signature restaurant, and branded residences in the Eastern Algarve. Set within the Monte Rei resort, the development is expected to welcome its first guests in 2029, becoming the brand's second destination in Portugal after its forthcoming hotel on Lisbon's Avenida da Liberdade.

Located in Portugal's southeastern corner near the Spanish border, the Eastern Algarve is known for its expansive countryside, championship golf courses, nature reserves and relatively quieter pace compared with some of the Algarve's larger resort centres. The region is also home to the Ria Formosa Natural Park, a protected coastal lagoon system renowned for its barrier islands, salt marshes and migratory birdlife, as well as historic towns such as Tavira and Vila Real de Santo António.

A New Nobu Destination Takes Shape In The Eastern Algarve

The new development will occupy more than 1,000 acres within the Monte Rei estate, centred around its acclaimed Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course. The project will comprise a 100-room hotel and suites, Nobu's signature restaurant, and 21,000 square metres of branded villas and residences. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027, with the development expected to open two years later.

The project is being developed in partnership with Portuguese investment management company Norfin, while Rockwell Group and DSA Architects have been appointed to lead the design. According to the announcement, the architectural approach will combine Nobu's design philosophy with Monte Rei's landscape and the character of the Eastern Algarve.

Why The Eastern Algarve Appeals To Travellers

While much of the Algarve's international tourism is concentrated around destinations such as Albufeira, Lagos, and Vilamoura, the eastern part of the region offers a different experience. Travellers often come here for its quieter beaches, protected natural landscapes and historic towns rather than large-scale resort developments.

The Ria Formosa Natural Park is among the region's best-known attractions, offering opportunities for birdwatching, kayaking and boat trips through its network of lagoons and islands. Nearby Tavira is known for its riverside setting, Roman bridge, medieval castle and traditional whitewashed architecture, while beaches such as Praia do Barril, Manta Rota and Cacela Velha remain popular for their wide stretches of sand and comparatively relaxed atmosphere.

The Algarve project forms part of Nobu Hospitality's wider European expansion. The company currently operates hotels in Barcelona, Ibiza, London, Marbella, Rome, San Sebastián and Warsaw. Nobu Hotel Madrid is scheduled to open this September, while future projects are planned in Hamburg and Kraków. Beyond hotels, the brand has also announced residences in Amsterdam and Montenegro, as well as its first countryside retreat in Rutland, England.

For Portugal, the Monte Rei project adds another internationally recognised luxury hospitality brand to the country's growing portfolio of high-end resorts. For travellers, it also draws attention to the Eastern Algarve, a region where golf, coastal landscapes, nature reserves and historic towns combine to offer an alternative to some of southern Europe's more established beach destinations.
