Explained: USA's New Visa Policies & Renewal Processes

Matching Barcode Numbers: Before the interview, applicants must ensure that the barcode number on their DS-160 confirmation page matches the one used to book their appointment. If there is a mismatch, applicants will not be allowed to attend the interview and will need to reschedule their appointment through the USTravelDocs website with the correct DS-160 barcode number.
DS-160 Form Requirements: The DS-160, also known as the "Online Non-immigrant Visa Application," is used for applying for all types of US non-immigrant visas, including B-1/B-2 visitor visas, K (fiancé) visas, F-1 student visas, and work visas such as H-1B and O-1. Completing and submitting this form online is a crucial step in the visa application process.
Visa Processing Fee: There is no fee for submitting the DS-160 form itself. However, applicants will still be required to pay the visa processing fee, which is typically USD 185 for most non-petition-based non-immigrant visas.

Changes to the US Visa Renewal Process in India

In addition to the DS-160 updates, the United States has also modified its visa renewal policy. Effective immediately, USA has reversed a Covid-era relaxation that allowed travellers to renew their visas without an interview if their previous visa had expired within the last 48 months.

Previous Rule (Post-November 2022): Applicants could renew their US visa without an interview if their previous visa expired within the last 48 months.
New Rule: The eligibility for an interview waiver has been reduced to just 12 months. This means that travellers whose visas expired more than 12 months ago will now be required to schedule an in-person interview.
