New Ropeway in Assam

This INR 59 crore project, launched by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on March 31, 2025, will span 446 m over the Brahmaputra River, offering an aerial journey for visitors. Designed to transport up to 300 passengers per hour, the ropeway will significantly cut travel time while ensuring safety and comfort, as per reports.

Until now, the only way to travel between Biswanath Ghat and Umatumani Island was by boat, often subject to weather conditions and operational delays. This new ropeway system eliminates those challenges and gives visitors an elevated view of the Brahmaputra River and its surroundings. It also enhances the region’s appeal as a tourist destination, making it more accessible to travellers eager to explore Assam’s hidden gems such as Biswanath Ghat and Umatumani Island.

Biswanath Ghat & Umatumani Island As Tourist Attractions

Located along the Brahmaputra River, Biswanath Ghat is a historic and religious hub, often called the "Varanasi of the East" due to its spiritual significance. The site is dotted with ancient temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, including the Biswanath Temple. Pilgrims and history enthusiasts flock here to witness the sacred rituals and admire the architectural beauty of the temple ruins scattered along the riverbank.

Apart from its religious charm, Biswanath Ghat is a picturesque riverside destination. The sight of fishermen casting their nets against the backdrop of a golden sunset on the Brahmaputra makes it a photographer’s paradise. The ghat is also a gateway to Kaziranga National Park, making it a strategic stop for wildlife lovers heading toward Assam’s most famous UNESCO World Heritage Site.

On the other hand, Umatumani Island is a lesser-explored destination that holds historical and cultural significance. The island is home to ancient temple ruins, including those believed to date back to the Ahom and Koch dynasty periods. This makes it an intriguing spot for history buffs and archaeology enthusiasts.

Beyond its historical appeal, Umatumani Island is also an eco-tourism destination. Surrounded by the waters of the Brahmaputra and greenery, it provides a peaceful retreat for visitors looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. The island is also great for birdwatching, as several migratory species make it their seasonal home.
