Mumbai Metro Achieves Significant Milestone With Tunnel Breakthrough

The Mumbai Metro project has achieved a significant milestone with the successful completion of a 1.65-kilometre tunnel on Metro Line 7A, which connects Andheri East to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA). Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis celebrated the occasion by activating the tunnel boring machine (TBM) alongside Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, the Metropolitan Commissioner of the MMRDA.

Better Accessibility To Airport

The project in Mumbai centres around a vital tunnel that connects Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (T2) to the Airport Colony station, enhancing accessibility and convenience for travellers and residents alike. Metro Line 7A is a 3.4-kilometre extension of the existing Red Line 7, which runs from Dahisar East to Gundavali.

Out of this extension, 2.5 kilometres will be underground, while 0.94 kilometres will be elevated. The extension will include two stations: Airport Colony (elevated) and CSMIA Terminal 2 (underground). This new line will provide essential connections with Metro Lines 1, 3, 6, and 9, ensuring seamless travel from Mira-Bhayander to the airport.

The completed tunnel spans an impressive 1.65 kilometers, constructed with 1,180 meticulously designed pre-cast concrete rings to ensure durability and structural integrity.

Engineers utilised a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) that was lowered to a depth of 30 metres below ground level in September 2023. This TBM, with a diameter of 6.35 metres, stood as a testament to modern engineering techniques, making the construction of the tunnel both efficient and safe.

The project represents a significant advancement in urban infrastructure, aimed at improving transport connectivity in the bustling city. “This tunnel boring machine overcame significant technical hurdles. It’s a key step toward delivering 150 km of metro lines within a year,” said CM Fadnavis.
