Meghalaya Tourism To Roll Out ‘Tourist Buddies’ At Major Hotspots

In a move to enhance and make tourism more convenient in the state, the Government of Meghalaya has started the "Tourist Buddies" initiative at four of its destinations namely, Shillong, Sohra (Cherrapunji), Dawki, and Mawlynnong. While the move would work towards a seamless visitor experience that prioritises safety, it also comes as a major step towards responsible and community-driven tourism in the state. The goal behind the move can also be ascribed to better management of visitors and minimising disorder in busy areas.

What Are 'Tourist Buddies?'

Led by the Department of Tourism in collaboration with the Meghalaya State Skill Development Society (MSSDS), the initiative hopes to train local youth professionally to assist tourists on ground. These "Tourist Buddies" will act as on-site tourist ambassadors and their role will entail offering valuable travel guidance, local insights, and real-time help if any emergency or confusion arises. The training modules for the ambassadors include hospitality practices, safety protocol, first aid, effective communication, and cultural sensitivity.

Training the locals and assimilating them into the fold of tourism in the state will eliminate unemployment and foster greater community participation in tourism development.

The "Tourist Buddies" will be deputed at major entry and activity hotspots within each destination, providing information, ensuring adherence to regulations, and serving as a link between tourists and local authorities.

Where Will "Tourist Buddies" Be Deployed?

The four chosen locations for the initial rollout are among Meghalaya’s most visited and iconic tourist spots.

Shillong, the state capital, is famed for its scenic beauty and vibrant music culture. Sohra, better known as Cherrapunji, boasts record-breaking rainfall, limestone caves, and majestic waterfalls. Dawki, located near the India-Bangladesh border, is widely known for the crystal-clear waters of the Umngot River, attracting thousands of adventure and leisure travellers. Mawlynnong, celebrated for its eco-conscious residents and pristine environment, has earned the title of "Asia’s Cleanest Village."

Despite being popular among tourists, these destinations have faced problems including crowding, environmental damage, and safety mishaps brought on by inadequate infrastructure and supervision. By ensuring visitors are given correct information, abide by local laws, and are made aware of their environmental obligations while travelling, the "Tourist Buddies" program is anticipated to provide a workable solution.

Boost to Responsible and Sustainable Tourism

This program demonstrates the government's emphasis on responsible tourism and is consistent with Meghalaya's larger initiatives to support ecotourism and sustainable development. There is an urgent need to strike a balance between the flood of tourists, ecological preservation, and community welfare as North East India becomes a more popular tourism destination.

In addition to guiding tourists, the buddies will also be tasked with maintaining decorum at crowded sites, helping in emergency situations, and reporting any illegal activities or violations of local codes. Their visible presence is also expected to discourage unauthorised guides and unregulated tourism practices.

Future Plans and Expansion

The Department of Tourism has indicated ambitions to extend the project to additional Meghalayan tourism circuits. To improve training materials and expand the program in a sustainable manner, the state is looking to form alliances with educational institutions, non-governmental organisations, and hospitality sectors.

Initiatives like "Tourist Buddies" have the potential to strengthen Meghalaya's dedication to safety, sustainability, and equitable development as the state continues to grow its tourism industry both domestically and internationally. This could serve as a model for other Indian states looking to improve their tourism infrastructure.
