Amidst the surge of COVID-19 cases across the country, states have been imposing stricter rules and guidelines.
The Meghalaya government on Monday announced a ban on entry of tourists into the state from April 23 onwards.
Conrad Sangma, Chief Minister of Meghalaya, passed the decree after evaluating the situation in the state as Meghalaya reported 73 new COVID-19 infections on Sunday. The number of active cases in the state now stands at 680.
Most of the tourists in Meghalaya end up at Shillong, Cherrapunji, Dawki, and what is known as the cleanest village in Asia - Mawlynnong.
The state has also shut all schools in Shillong for two weeks from Tuesday, up until May 4.
The state government has ordered the government and private offices to function with 50 per cent of their staff. The COVID-19 situation in all districts of the state is being closely monitored.
Tourist destinations receiving a lot of footfall shall be closed for the time being. And the time frame for RT-PCR test reports has been reduced from 72 hours to 48 hours.
