In a significant boost to tourism infrastructure in the remote areas of Maharashtra, the state inaugurated its first glass skywalk bridge on 22 July, built over the picturesque Napne Waterfall in the Sindhudurg region. The skywalk is dexterously designed to offer panoramic views of the cascading waterfall and the surrounding lush green valley, and is poised to turn into a major attraction for both thrill-seekers and nature enthusiasts.
The glass skywalk, situated in the remote village of Nadhavade in of Sindhudurg district that falls within the Konkan region, marks a milestone in Maharashtra’s efforts to enhance eco-tourism offerings. Not only is it the first time such a structure has been built in the state to offer tourists an adrenaline rush but it is also equipped to be a secure way to experience the natural beauty of the Konkan region. The project was completed at a cost of a whopping INR 99.63 lakh and is expected to bring a spring in local tourism and economy.
The glass skywalk, which is suspended over the breathtaking Napne Waterfall, allows guests to step out onto a clear platform and enjoy unhindered views of the surroundings. Located in the heart of the Konkan area, Napne Waterfall is a rewarding destination, especially during the monsoon season. The glass bridge can only contribute an increase in its beauty and year-round traffic. To provide safety without sacrificing the sensation and thrill of walking "on air", the bridge is constructed with steel supports and reinforced glass.
Compared to Maharashtra's more well-known tourist destinations, Konkan's rustic charm has long been underestimated. Local authorities hope that this new addition will raise awareness of the area's untapped potential. To enhance connectivity and build amenities in and around the Sindhudurg area, the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) has been working on a number of projects. The Napne skywalk project is a component of a broader initiative to establish the Konkan region as a top travel destination.
The skywalk's location, Nadhavade village, stands at 3 km from Vaibhavwadi Railway Station, with good rail and road connections. Sindhudurg Airport, which links the area to large cities like Mumbai, is the closest airport at 94km. The village also lies in the vicinity of Kolhapur-Tarle National Highway. The skywalk is also accessible by local transportation from Kankavli. To handle the anticipated increase in tourists, the area surrounding the waterfall is being progressively improved with basic facilities including parking, rest spaces, and food vendors.
Amidst all the mirth and animation, authorities continue to place a high premium on safety. Only a certain number of people will be permitted at a time, and the bridge was built in accordance with strict specifications for load-bearing and wind resistance. In order to prevent scratches on the glass surface, visitors will also need to wear shoe covers. During business hours, guardrails, signage, and supervision personnel will be put in place.
