Maharashtra Forest Department To Restore Tamhini Wildlife Sanctuary In Partnership With Microsoft, Pune NGO

bThe Western Ghats in Maharashtra are a significant biodiversity hotspot known for their rich and diverse ecosystems. They host a wide array of flora and fauna, including many endemic species, and are recognised as one of the world's "hottest hotspots" of biological diversity. One notable area within this region is the Tamhini Wildlife Sanctuary, part of the biodiversity hotspots in Maharashtra’s Western Ghats. Recently, a new initiative called “Biodiversity and Eco-Protection in Plus Valley, Tamhini Wildlife Sanctuary” was announced to enhance conservation efforts and promote sustainable development.

The Deputy Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) Tushar Chavan announced the collaboration between the Maharashtra Forest Department, Microsoft, and the Centre for Youth Development and Activities (CYDA), based in Pune. The partnership aims to address pressing socio-ecological challenges within the sanctuary.

About The Tamhini Wildlife Sanctuary Restoration Initiative

The initiative signifies a proactive approach to safeguard the environment while simultaneously supporting the needs of the surrounding communities. The project is aimed at restoring the delicate ecosystem of the area located in the biodiversity-rich Western Ghats (read more about this wilderness here.) The CYDA will implement this one-year project in close collaboration with the Forest Department. The initiative addresses critical socio-environmental challenges in the region and promotes nature-based solutions for long-term ecological resilience.

Inside Tamhini Wildlife Sanctuary, Pune

Located 70 km from Pune, Tamhini Wildlife Sanctuary is renowned for its stunning scenery and rich biodiversity. The sanctuary offers trails for hiking, birdwatching, and walking, and it is particularly popular during the monsoon season due to the stunning lush green landscape and waterfalls.

The new project will involve installing benches, protective gates, and solar lights, as well as constructing drinking water and sanitation facilities. Additionally, measures will be implemented to manage plastic waste by installing dustbins and bottle crushers.
