Luxembourg is First Country in World to make Public Transport Free

Luxembourg recently became the first country in the world to roll out free public transport system. You can ride trams, trains and buses for free as of February 29, 2020. The one exception is first-class train travel, which will cost &pound2.60 (&euro3) per journey.

In particularly good news for tourists, transport will be free to all visitors to the country as well as Luxembourg&rsquos 614,000 residents. The new regulation applies to all public bus, train, and tram rides across the entire Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, for all residents, commuters, and tourists. 

As Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported, some evening bus services, as well as first-class domestic train travel, will still be subject to fares.

The measure is part of a plan intended to reduce congestion. Luxembourg Times say that Luxembourg City has the sixth-worst congestion for a global city with a population of less than 800,000. Private cars are the most used means of transport in the Grand Duchy, accounting for 47 percent of business travel and 71 percent of leisure transport. With more than 200,000 people living in neighbouring France, Germany and Belgium who work in Luxembourg and most of them driving in, that makes for major traffic jams at peak hours.
