Shah emphasised that the creation of these new districts aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for a developed and prosperous Ladakh. The region, previously comprising only Leh and Kargil districts, now has an enhanced administrative structure intended to bring government services closer to the people.

Ladakh was designated a Union Territory (UT) after its separation from Jammu and Kashmir in August 2019, following the abrogation of Article 370. The region covers an area of 86,904 square kilometers, with a population of approximately 274,000 according to the 2011 census.

These districts, each with its unique geographical and cultural significance, will now receive more focused attention from the government. Zanskar, known for its remote terrain and Buddhist heritage; Drass, the second coldest inhabited place; Sham, with its historical sites; Nubra, famous for its sand dunes and monasteries; and Changthang, home to nomadic communities and the Pangong Lake, will all benefit from enhanced infrastructure and services.
