In a significant move to elevate the cruise tourism experience in Kerala, the Kerala Tourism Department has sanctioned a makeover project for the International Cruise Terminal in Kochi. With an administrative nod for a project worth INR 32.50 lakh, the initiative will focus on interior furnishing and revamping the proposed passenger lounge to offer a contemporary, comfortable space for international travellers.

Tourism Minister PA Mohamed Riyas emphasised the strategic importance of the project, stating, “Cruise tourism has been identified as a highly promising segment by Kerala Tourism, especially by leveraging the inherent potential of Kochi. We plan to develop the International Cruise Terminal in Kochi as a facility that boasts world-class features.”

Passenger Lounge To Be Renovated As Part Of Cruise Upgrade

Aimed at boosting passenger comfort and aesthetics, the lounge will be outfitted with modern furniture, including plush sofa sets, teapoys, and a magazine stand. The design will also integrate planter boxes, ambient hanging lights, and curated artworks like traditional Kerala mural paintings to reflect the region’s cultural vibrancy. Additional amenities like a 65-inch LED TV with a stabiliser, high-speed internet connectivity, and provision for drinking water are also on the cards.

Cruise Tourism in Kerala

Kochi has established itself as a major port of call for international cruise liners docking along India’s southwestern coast. With its scenic waterfront, colonial charm, and thriving art and culinary scenes, the city is a favourite among international cruise tourists. The proposed upgrade aligns with Kerala’s broader vision of transforming Kochi into a global cruise tourism hub, offering hospitality from shore to city.

The makeover is expected to be completed for the upcoming cruise season, enhancing Kochi’s appeal as a premier gateway to ‘God’s Own Country.’
