Kannur is all Set to Become the Star of North Kerala. Heres Why

Kerala Tourism is ambitiously working towards turning Kannur into North Kerala's tourism hub. A Rs. 52.54 crore first-stage development project is underway at the Muzhappilangad Beach, one of the few drive-in beaches in Asia. Similarly, work will start soon at Dharmadam beach and island.

The project is a key ingredient in promoting Kerala Tourism&rsquos aggressive campaign for the Malabar region. It can put the coastal city of Kannur on the world tourism map. The project is estimated to cost Rs. 233.72 crores. 

The picturesque Dharmadam island has been featured by the BBC as one of the top six best beaches for driving in the world. Also known as the 'Green Island', the private island is surrounded by rivers on three sides and the Arabian Sea on one side. It offers scenic views of the confluence of Anjarakandy and Thalassery Rivers. 

According to reports, Tourism Minister Kadampally Surendran said that the development project offers a great opportunity for the beautiful destination to attract a number of tourists. At the moment, it is heavily under-utilising its tourism potential.

Moreover, the project will not only transform the location but will also offer development opportunities for other businesses and industries in the region. The estimated footfall of about 1.8-2 million visitors per annum will contribute to the state&rsquos GDP.

More than 30 species of migratory birds visit Muzhappilangad beach. Due to its substantial size, a number of activities are being explored to attract tourists. However, character areas need to be carved out based on the site&rsquos potential and the proposed activities. This is vital to be able to offer a diversified experience to domestic and foreign tourists, said Kerala Tourism Director P. Bala Kiran. 

A giant wheel and a health resort with Kerala&rsquos unique Ayurvedic therapies are also being proposed.

The three tourism sites are easily accessible by air. The new international airport at Kannur connects major domestic and international tourist destinations.

The entire project is funded by Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund (KIIFB). As the Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV), the Kerala Irrigation Infrastructure Development Corporation (KIIDC) Limited is executing it.
